Discover the Exciting World of Amateur Radio
The use of two-way radio equipment in South Africa is regulated by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). Before you can obtain an amateur radio license, you are required to pass the prescribed ICASA examination.
The examination is straightforward and consists of two multiple-choice papers. Examinations are conducted twice each year, in May and October.
The West Rand Amateur Radio Club offers a comprehensive training course designed to help candidates pass the examination with confidence.

What the Course Includes
- Club membership
- Weekly virtual theoretical classes presented every Tuesday evening
- Training commences approximately four months before the examination date
- Four practical Saturday morning sessions at our clubhouse
- Hands-on experience in setting up and operating amateur radio transceivers
- Exam invigilation at the Club House
- Guidance and support throughout the licensing process
The South African Radio League grades the examinations and also assists successful candidates with registering their chosen amateur radio call signs with ICASA.
Whether your interest lies in emergency communications, electronics, experimentation, or simply communicating with people around the world, amateur radio is a rewarding and fascinating hobby.
